Boys in 2011imageThis is part 1 in a series highlighting communications with a teacher my twins had for first grade (5 years ago). I hope to illustrate what can happen when a teacher takes the time to understand (and appreciate) their students. It also illustrates some of the unique issues associated with parenting twins on the autism spectrum. They attend a private school for kids with learning differences with a class ration of about 8:1.

Part 1 – We decided to try Zoloft for significant mood swings in hopes of “balancing” his emotions.

Subject: Happy Monday!

Quick update – R started on the zoloft. Not on the full dose yet and
no side effects that I can tell. Too soon to tell if it will work either.
I take that back – if he seems sleepy during literacy it’s from the
zoloft. He knows he needs to be good or no book fair (which mrs C had
indicated was during library times). I’ll be there working today. Woo
hoo!
I broke down and got them the national geographic sea monsters DVD .
R watched it 5 times yesterday and has already asked to watch it
today.
C hurt his butt somehow last night and started howling about how he
needed to go to a butt doctor. He says it feels good this morning

I’ll let you know how he does today. He came in happy mumbling about sea
monsters. They get to go to the book fair today, tomorrow during lit and
then we’ll go the following day to purchase wish list items. So, they’ll
be “book faired” out! Better send a debit card.

Hopefully C’s butt will be fine today. He cracks me up!

Later that day from the Teacher:

R. had a better morning. Seemed much more willing to stick with the plan…we’ll see how that goes when the book fair isn’t hanging over his head. Also with him in math we’re still working on some concepts and review skills to get him ready for Saxon. His one-one counting is still pretty sloppy, so we’re working on that on more/less, etc. Just wanted to let you know that he’s not working on what 1st grade news says…yet…but we’re hoping to move there soon!

R. has a wad of playdoh stuck to his shoe right now that he’s tracking everywhere. He’s trying to shake it off like it’s chasing him. C keeps calling me his “beautiful Cinderella” b/c he wants to look at sea monsters on my computer. He really has figured out how to “work it” at a young age! See you at the book fair!
